When Time Wears a Face: Holding On While Letting Go
You don’t expect the ache to come like this.
Not when they’re just learning to stand.
Not when they flash that gummy smile.
Not when they say “mama” with wonder in their voice.
But it comes—quietly, suddenly, overwhelmingly.
Because your baby, once nestled on your chest in those still hospital hours, is now crawling away from you… toward a world you can’t control.
And just like that, time has a face.
The Bittersweet Clock
They say time flies. But no one tells you it hurts.
No one prepares you for how strange it feels to clap for first steps while mourning the last time they needed you to carry them.
No one tells you the very milestones you prayed for will be the ones that break your heart just a little.
You watch the newborn disappear into the folds of memory, and you realize: you are watching a version of your child for the last time, every single day.
And suddenly, motherhood becomes a sacred tug-of-war between holding on and letting go.
A Physical Representation of Time
In your child, you see it: time that can’t be rewound. Growth that can’t be paused.
Tiny socks no longer fit. Bottles are phased out. The baby swing sits empty.
And the lump in your throat?
It’s grief and gratitude holding hands.
Your baby is a physical representation of time—a living, breathing reminder that this life is fleeting, that moments are passing, and that love grows even when your arms feel emptier than they used to.
Anchored in Faith
And so, where do we go with this ache?
This strange cocktail of joy, fear, wonder, and sadness?
We go to God—the only One not bound by time.
Because while time moves quickly, He is constant.
While babies grow out of swaddles, His arms never let go.
While you try to memorize every blink, giggle, and stretch, He holds it all—every detail, every moment, every tear.
Ecclesiastes 3:11 says,
“He has made everything beautiful in its time.”
Even this.
Even the ache.
Even the letting go.
A Prayer for the Mama Watching Time Walk
Lord, help me cherish today without fearing tomorrow.
Give me grace for the moments I want to freeze and peace for the ones I can’t.
Thank You for this child—my living reminder of how quickly life moves,
and how faithfully You stay.
Trusting God With Every Season
Motherhood is not just a journey through milestones—it’s a spiritual walk through seasons.
From swaddles to steps, from babbles to goodbyes at the preschool door, every phase is a fresh invitation to trust God with what we can’t control.
So mama, breathe.
Cry when you need to.
Celebrate when you can.
Take the video. Hold the moment. Say the prayer.
And remember—
You’re not just watching time pass.
You’re witnessing a miracle unfold.
And the God who gave you this baby? He’s holding both of you—every step of the way.
